Who are the Quincy

Quincy (Japanese: 滅却師, Kuinshi, "Destroyers") are spiritually aware humans capable of absorbing spiritual particles (reishi) from the environment and turning them into weapons. They are the polar opposite of Shinigami: while Shinigami use inner spiritual power, Quincy draw energy from outside.

The main goal of the Quincy is the complete destruction of Hollows, not purification, as with the Shinigami. This difference led to a conflict: the mass destruction of Hollows disrupted the balance of souls, which is why the Soul Society exterminated most of the Quincy about 200 years ago.

The surviving Quincy split up: some remained in the world of humans (for example, the Ishida family), others hid in the shadows of Seireitei, creating the Wandenreich under the leadership of Yhwach.

Quincy abilities and techniques

The Quincy fight using reishi — spiritual particles of the atmosphere. Their main techniques:

  • Reishi absorption — gathering spiritual particles from the surroundings to create weapons and attacks.

  • Spiritual weapon — most often a bow (Heilig Bogen), but it can also be a sword.

  • Hirenkyaku — a technique of rapid movement along the flow of reishi, an analogue of the Shinigami's shunpo.

  • Blut — strengthening attack or defense by filling blood vessels with reishi. The two forms (attacking and defensive) cannot work simultaneously.

  • Shadow — the ability to teleport through shadows, granted by Yhwach.

Rare techniques

  • Ransotengai — control of the body through reishi threads, allows movement even with fractures.

  • Letzt Stil — the final form that removes the Sanrei glove, grants enormous power, but permanently deprives one of strength.

  • Vollständig — an improved version of Letzt Stil, has no side effects, grants wings and a halo.

  • Schrift — a letter granted by Yhwach, awakens a unique ability.

Quincy history

Origin and Lichtreich

The Quincy trace their origins to Yhwach, the son of the Soul King. About 1000 years ago, he created the empire Lichtreich ("Empire of Light"), uniting the scattered Quincy clans. After their defeat by the Gotei 13, the remnants of the empire took refuge in the pocket dimension Schatten Bereich, becoming the Wandenreich ("Invisible Empire").

Quincy Extermination

Because of the threat to the balance of the worlds, the Shinigami destroyed most of the Quincy 200 years ago. Some of the survivors tried to negotiate cooperation, but the Shinigami refused. The last proponent of reconciliation, Soken Ishida (Uryu's grandfather), died at the hands of Hollows when the Shinigami did not arrive in time to help.

The Legend of the King's Return

The song Kaiser Gesang predicted the return of Yhwach: in 900 years the heart would return, in 90 — the intellect, in 9 — the power. To restore his power, Yhwach stole the abilities of "impure" Quincy, including Masaki Kurosaki and Kanae Katagiri.

  • Quincy Cross — focuses reishi, creates a bow. Different clans have different forms (Celtic cross, pentacle).

  • Ginto — capsules with stored spiritual energy, used for spells.

  • Seeleschneider — a thin sword-arrow vibrating at high frequency, weakens the bonds of spiritual matter.

  • Sanrei Glove — enhances powers, but training with it is dangerous; removing it activates Letzt Stil.

  • Medallion — a Wandenreich device that allows stealing a Shinigami's bankai.
