What is a zanpakutō
Zanpakutō (Japanese: 斬魄刀, Zanpakutō, literally "soul-cutting sword") — the main weapon of shinigami in the world of "Bleach". It is not just a blade, but a reflection of the owner's soul, a sentient being with its own character and will. Inside each zanpakutō lives a spirit with which the shinigami can communicate.
Zanpakutō was created by Ōetsu Nimaiya of the Royal Guard. He forges asauchi — nameless swords that are then given to shinigami. Gradually, by pouring his soul into the sword, a shinigami awakens its unique form and abilities.
Asauchi: the beginning of the path
Asauchi (Jap. 浅打, "shallow strike") — a nameless zanpakutō issued to every shinigami upon entering the Academy. All asauchi are forged personally by Ōetsu Nimaiya.
A shinigami spends every day with the asauchi, imprinting the essence of his soul into it. Over time, the nameless sword gains a name and a unique appearance, becoming a full-fledged zanpakutō.
Special cases:
Kenpachi Zaraki took an asauchi from a deceased shinigami without studying at the Academy.
Kaname Tōsen took the sword of a deceased friend and turned it into his zanpakutō Suzumushi.
Members of the Ise clan cannot create their own zanpakutō: their blade Shinken Hakkyōken is passed down by inheritance.
Zanpakutō forms
A shinigami's zanpakutō has three states: sealed, shikai and bankai. Arrancars instead have resurrección.
Sealed form
The usual state of the sword. As a rule, it is a katana, but other types are also found: wakizashi (Gin), ōdachi (Kenpachi), tantō (Iba), cane (Yamamoto, Urahara). The form depends on the owner and his spiritual power.
Shikai (始解, "initial release")
The first stage. To activate it, one must learn the name of the zanpakutō and speak the kaigō — the release command.
Examples of commands:
"Sting your enemies to death, Suzumebachi" — Soi Fon, 2nd Division.
"Bloom, Senbonzakura" — Byakuya Kuchiki.
"Descend from the frozen heavens, Hyorinmaru" — Toshiro Hitsugaya.
Shikai changes the shape of the sword and grants unique abilities. Masters can activate it without a command, but beginners need the full ritual.
Bankai (卍解, "final release")
The final stage, a power increase of 5–10 times compared to shikai. To obtain bankai, one must materialize the sword spirit in the real world and subjugate it.
Training usually takes 10 years or more. Exceptions are Ichigo Kurosaki and Kisuke Urahara, who mastered bankai in three days with the help of a special device, the Tenshintai (but the method is deadly dangerous).
Drawbacks of bankai:
Requires enormous expenditure of spiritual energy.
A broken bankai does not fully recover (except for rare exceptions).
If the spirit has not acknowledged its owner, the bankai will be weaker than the true one.
Years of training are needed for control.
The difference between the zanpakuto of shinigami and arrancar
Criterion | Shinigami | Arrancar |
|---|---|---|
Origin | Asauchi forged by Oetsu | A piece of the Hollow mask that became a sword |
Forms | Shikai, bankai | Resurrección (return of Hollow power) |
Sword spirit | Yes | Unknown |
Repair | Sealed and shikai are restored | A broken resurrección cannot be restored |
Application | Combat, soul burial, senkaimon | Combat only |
Resurrección (Spanish for "resurrection") — the release of an arrancar that returns its hollow powers. The sword merges with the body, partially returning the hollow to its true form. In power, resurrección is comparable to bankai.

How to obtain bankai: step by step
Materialize the zanpakuto spirit — bring it out from the inner world into the real one.
Subjugate the spirit — defeat it in battle, prove your strength.
Achieve unity — establish a connection so that the spirit acknowledges its owner.
This usually takes 10+ years of training. Urahara's method with Tenshintai allows reducing the time to three days, but it is extremely dangerous.
