Shikai (Japanese: 始解, "initial release") — the first improved form of the zanpakutō. To activate it, a shinigami must know the name of their sword and be able to communicate with its spirit.

The release occurs when speaking the kaigō — the release command, followed by the zanpakutō's name. For example: "Roar, Zabimaru" or "Scatter, Senbonzakura".

The commands differ for everyone: from a single verb to a short phrase. They hint at the sword's ability or the spirit's character.

What shikai gives:

  • Changes the shape of the blade.

  • Activates special abilities (fire, ice, illusions, poison, etc.).

  • Available to most shinigami of lieutenant level and above.

How to get shikai:

  1. Obtain an asāuchi — a nameless sword.

  2. Train, pouring your soul into the sword.

  3. Hear the name of the zanpakutō spirit.

  4. Speak the release command.

Sometimes shikai may not change the blade's form, but only add special properties (like Kyoka Suigetsu).

Bankai (Japanese: 卍解, "full release") — the second and final form of zanpakuto. It is the highest level, available only to the strongest shinigami.

The power of bankai is usually 5–10 times greater than that of shikai. It requires a huge amount of spiritual energy and complete unity with the sword.

To obtain bankai, you need to:

  1. Materialize the zanpakuto spirit — bring it out from the inner world into the real one.

  2. Subjugate it — fight and win.

  3. Make the spirit acknowledge its owner — only then will bankai reveal its true name and full power.

Training usually takes 10 years or more. The exception is Ichigo Kurosaki and Kisuke Urahara, who used the Tenshintai device and achieved bankai in three days (but this is deadly dangerous). And even after obtaining Bankai, it takes many years to fully master it.

Drawbacks of bankai:

  • Huge reiatsu costs.

  • A broken bankai does not fully recover (except for rare exceptions).

  • If the spirit has not acknowledged its owner, the form will be weaker than the true one.

  • Requires many years of practice for full control.

How to obtain Bankai: stages

  1. Materialization — bring the zanpakutō spirit into the real world.

  2. Battle with the spirit — subjugate it to your will.

  3. Recognition — the spirit reveals the true name and full form of the bankai.

If the spirit has not recognized its owner, it may give a false name, and the bankai will be weaker. This was the case with Renji Abarai (Hihio Zabimaru before Soo Zabimaru).
